Uh oh, am I a traitor?
Here's some excellent reading regarding the political makeup of modern conservatism, or to put it more succinctly, why the rabid right are so rabid. It makes a point that I think gets overlooked entirely too often: most people who consider themselves conservative or on the right are in no way conservative, republican, or politically right in any consistent sense. And while I think it's extraordinarily childish to describe the entirety of one's ideology in a right/left context, the far-right do not seem to adhere to my own preference for (gasp!) taking individual situations in their relevant context, but instead focus on a rather arbitrary set of tautologies that they confuse with moral statutes. The term 'liberal' is almost exclusively defined as 'anti-Bush'. Not anti-conservative, anti-Bush, because Bush is seen as some sort of great all-knowing being one step removed from the divine. A Bodhisattva of conservatism, if you will. The problem naturally is that Bush is no conservative and is probably no more politically-inclined than your typical corporate executive, and so his priority is in sustaining his image as a protector of the right, rather than actual conservative ideals. And his supporters are so eager to support him that they've given him the right to disregard those ideals if it lets him protect them better -- if that makes any sense.
But that's all rather obvious and has been said better by plenty of people. Here's my question: why do people support him? I don't mean why people support the role he plays -- that's a blind spot I don't share but I can see the emotional hole it fills for people -- I mean, why him specifically? He's not particularly good at anything. Seriously, try to come up with one skill or talent he's got. There aren't any real statesman in modern politics, as far as I can tell -- read some of the speeches by nearly any politician before, say, the Korean War -- but he's down at the bottom in terms of charisma, eloquence, natural ability, compassion, or general understanding of anything. Surely there had to be someone a little more capable for them to select as their Great Leader?
